The Kanto Biregional Tournament: get your matchups here!

The below matchups are final and will not be changed, unless one participant is in the wrong bracket due to an oversight. Participants will have 7 days to give us Round 1 winners, at which point we'll be posting the next round's matches. Each round will be randomized to provide some diversity.

Due to the large number of rounds — 6 for Elite — we will be shortening the amount of time players will have to give us their answers, so that the last few Elite rounds will be spaced 3 days apart. If you're afraid of missing a date, just check the calendar for more information!

In the case that one partner goes missing, the person who attempted contact will win by default. If extenuating circumstances come into play, such as a personal emergency requiring a hiatus (with due warning to the mods and the battle partner), we will flip a coin.

Update: players facing off against gym leaders can have a coin flipped (default) or choose to strategize, in which case they should use the post here.

To post winners, please see this screened post! BOTH partners must comment with the name of winner in order for the victory to be valid. If not, see the above paragraph. If neither player comments, there will be no victor.

You can use this post to discuss your matches. If no consensus can be reached, the mods will flip a coin upon request.

Playing out the matches is highly encouraged, but optional! Here is an open log for all your battling needs! Bugsy, Whitney, Brock, Misty, Blaine, Surge and Blue will be competing in the tournament and will also be participating in the open log, under the account [personal profile] these_guys.

The prizes at the very end of the tournament will be one (1) fossil and one (1) reusable Unova TM, both chosen by the winners.

Without further ado, here are the matchups for round 1!

Calling for Kimblee to plan out this epic battle in the finals!
explosivecombat: (It's no accident that I've survived)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-19 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, hello there, Saber!

Kimblee is under the general understanding that he has some sort of ridiculous score to settle with her and is more or less under orders to completely obliterate her in battle; unfortunately for Archer, he really doesn't care and is just hoping this will prove entertaining. He's in it for the challenge, after all not anyone's revolution.

He tends to lead with Absol; perhaps one day he will change that, but today is not that day - if she's the sort to pay attention to that sort of thing, he's done this in the previous four battles as well.
autocratic: (no one woman)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-19 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
Worthy adversary!

Haha, looks like they both want the same thing: entertainment. In response to Absol, she'll throw out her Metagross. If he's also watched her battles, Saber doesn't go by verbal commands, so Metagross will immediately whip up an Agility and Reflect to keep it up to speed keep its defenses high.
explosivecombat: (Someone needs to listen more carefully)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-19 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least that way they aren't running too much of a risk of being disappointed regardless of outcome! And he has, indeed, been watching; he's actually rather impressed with her control in that regard - his usual battling partner also doesn't issue verbal commands, but he usually has another Psychic Pokémon around or he's twitching about a bit while he does things, so Kimblee's used to watching for visual cues. The fact that she doesn't appear to use too many that he can figure out is kind of mesmerizing, ngl.

That aside, however, he'll start with Double Team to hopefully increase his chances of not immediately getting killed in the face, though his response to that Reflect is just going to be a bit of a smirk, followed by Flamethrower. He'll avoid getting in close for now, because he really, really does not want Ramsay getting punched by the Psychic braintank, and he's more than willing to sacrifice STAB/put up with Absol's less-than-stellar Sp Attack power in the name of exploiting type advantages.
autocratic: (childlike creativity purity honesty)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-19 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Very true! Still, the previous tournament Saber was involved in left little desire to lose (you lose = imminent death), so Saber's still gonna do her level best to obtain victory!

Hey, if the Absol doesn't want to get too close, that's okay. Her Metagross will use a Protect to ward off that Flamethrower, which it will then follow up with a Signal Beam. This is mostly a lure, however, in case the Absol dodges or uses a Protect as well (thank you for the caution against Protect spam, Archer), the Metagross will aim a Bullet Punch at it.
explosivecombat: (Yes - I remember you well)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-19 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Kimblee can certainly respect that - at the same time, he does battles to the death for fun, so just about anything he might have to say on the subject kind of results in immediate "you are a moron; your argument is invalid." He also has immense amounts of pride, so this has potential to get hilarious really fast, but tl;dr - "competition, hell yeah!"

That said! Archer has taught him well, and he actually will throw up Protect in the spirit of "oh my godddddddddddddddddddd why does literally everything learn Signal Beam, what the hell"; he'll take the Bullet Punch, which Ramsay won't be too pleased about, but he'll also be taking advantage of the fact that it requires contact and getting in close - he won't know what move she's using (and will be immensely grateful that it hits for far less damage than he suspects it might) but he'll take his chances with it in order to try getting off a Fire Blast directly into that thing's face.
autocratic: (fighting for custody)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-19 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
She wouldn't dock him for it! She's a Roman emperor, after all: battles to the death were all the rage for her and her people. Spirited competitors on both ends, y/n?

Thanks to Metagross being, well... a tank that's smarter than a supercomputer, and due to the speed buff it got from the Agility, Metagross' response, despite being so close is another Protect (really, Archer, you just had to throw that around). Then it'll raise its strength with a Swords Dance and try to hit the Absol again with another Bullet Punch.
explosivecombat: (A sexy revolution!)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-19 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
...MY GOD, WOMAN, WHY HASN'T HE SPOKEN TO YOU BEFORE...

But yeah, he recognizes that Swords Dance as being a very bad thing in terms of Ramsay's potential for surviving too many physical hits; he'll be using Detect against that Bullet Punch (...just...for some variety, he supposes...) before rather abruptly switching out for the Mamoswine and getting some snowfall started with Hail, for the sake of boosting his evasion with Snow Cloak and bringing Blizzard's accuracy up should he need it.
autocratic: (no one woman)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-19 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Both of them were too busy being badasses? (And ironically, she's part of the Corps and he's a Rocket...)

Kimblee's decision will make Saber raise an eyebrow, but she won't comment on it. She'll just cross her arms and keep watching while her Metagross introduces a Double Team to its new competitor. After that, it's going to try and use Grass Knot on his Mamoswine.
explosivecombat: (Go on and keep that up)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-19 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
...ahaha, oh dear.

And there actually is method to his madness, don't worry - that being that if he can't brute-force an attack due to Protect, he's going to be making this battle as annoying as possible and Carlisle has a lot of moves that can make battles wicked annoying. You're also going to learn quickly that he likes aiming for the face when his opponents come closer to initiate contact-making moves; as much as moves like Mud-Slap completely offend his sense of cleanliness, it's what he's going to be doing as soon as that Grass Knot starts coming into play. Assuming that isn't also Protect-spammed against or otherwise evaded, he's willing to potentially take damage for the sake of killing her accuracy further.
autocratic: (the world's ours)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-19 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that she advertises or plays that part of herself much, so. Herp.

Ah, a battle to try and annoy the normally hot-headed Saber... which might work, but many keep forgetting she survived the conspiracies of Rome long enough to endure enough bullshit! Grass Knot isn't a physical move, but still, having Mud Slap thrown at its face isn't pleasent. It's not going to be Protected against, rather... it's going to meet Metagross' Substitute instead. It'll be retaliating back with a Brick Break, though.
explosivecombat: (Yes - I remember you well)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-19 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no, but it's one of those Special moves that are the exception to the does-not-make-contact rule regarding Special attacks, unless my brain is malfunctioning again and I am not remembering correctly (...it's seven in the morning and I have had two hours of sleep, my apologies for anything that's less coherent than usual.) Either way, however, Grass Knot is less than pleasant, and the Substitute is going to be met with...a lot of "okay yeahno what the hell is that," tbh, as it's not a tactic he's terribly familiar with outside of this tournament and it's managed to confuse him every time he's witnessed it being used. He's observed enough to get a basic idea of what to do to it, however, so he's going to be utilizing Dig to avoid the Brick Break and finish off the Substitute.

...this is about the point when he will actually compliment you on being formidable there, Saber, because good lord.
autocratic: (you start screaming)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-19 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that's alright! Though, you should try and get some rest if you can! Grass Knot basically summons up a strong strip of grass to trip the victim and damages depending on how heavy the Pokemon is, so the user would still probably be at a distance. While he's doing away with the Substitute, her Metagross will be using Double Team again and going for a good ol' Bullet Punch.

Aw, I'm sure Kimblee also had some tough competition before her! She'd take that compliment with a laugh, and commend him for making this entertaining for her. Then she'll go back to her "hardly talking anymore" shtick, but she'll have a smirk on her face for a good while.
explosivecombat: (And we're seceding from the world)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-19 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I've been sick tonight so I'm doing what I can! I can still think, it's just kind of hard to put exactly what it is that I mean to say when translating the thoughts into writing, aaaaand in cases like this it's my brain knowing what something is and yet providing a mental picture that makes literally no damn sense, so! Appreciating the correction, and...dear god, Bullet Punching everywhere again. Carlisle does have a Sitrus Berry on him (now that Archer has finally gotten it through Kimblee's skull that this is a Good Idea), which is fortunate because that Mamoswine was seriously at a point where if you looked at it wrong it was going to up and die tbh; pretty much another solid hit is going to have it down for the ten-count and Kimblee knows it, so now is when he starts trying to go for the larger moves, because Kimblee Has Had It With This Metagross. He'll be ensuring that the Hail holds up (because continuing to chip away 1/16th of its health is...better than nothing tbh) and then actually attacking with Earth Power, trying to exploit the weakness to Ground.

And he's had a lot of tough competition before her - Talim and Rose were good battlers and his victories against them came down to type advantages; Isaac and Cecil nearly took him out of the tournament and the victories were very narrow. Doesn't change the validity of the compliment any~ (...aka, yes, he is going to notice that smirking.)
autocratic: (got a nice ring to it)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-19 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I wish you a speedy recovery! Bad enough there's little rest, but I do hope you get better soon. Haha, what was that about annoying tactics? It doesn't do much, but with STAB and a Swords Dance backing it up in a Metagross, it's pretty effective by itself! The Hail is only a minor worry (but still a worry) due to Metagross being built like a tank and having a resistance to Ice, but it's not going to go down easily. Kimblee's probably not gonna like when Metagross decides to Protect - again - against that Earth Power. Since he likes aiming for the face so much, Metagross will make it easier for him and perform an Iron Head at his Mamoswine soon after.

Still, the fact that he made it this far says a lot! She's glad to have a worthy opponent in this final battle. She might not show it, but she'll be brimming with excitement and anticipation.

I DID NOT FORGET ABOUT THIS I PROMISE, I have just been more or less functionally dead for the last two days BUT I AM BETTER NOW...I...think...

sob

Honestly, he'd be disappointed if it went down early, haha; out of the things she came into this tournament with, the psychic spidertank is the one he pegged as being more than a bit of a worry. That said, however, he'll do you the courtesy of not aiming at Metagross' face this time when it comes close for that - he's going to be aiming for the entire damn field by trying to get an Earthquake off, as the one god he has yet to piss off (whichever that is, maybe Arceus) is going to let Snow Cloak actually do its thing for once and spare his ass for the next thirty seconds.

And he's...a little less restrained on the "not showing it" part, though for the time being he's keeping it to a lot of smirking; at least nothing's exploding at this point, as that would be getting the maniacal laughter and the crazy and the oh honey no, but now he's...looking very interested in all this and the commands are getting a bit manic-sounding, but at least the crazy laughter hasn't started yet.
autocratic: (move your body around)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-22 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Tricky Mamoswine! Thankfully Metagross has used a different move, so it's gonna Protect against that Earthquake and try to wait out the precious several seconds Mamoswine has in covering itself in the storm. It'll bump itself up with Iron Defense and another Double Team - probably the last it's able to do now. Now it'll just try and wait and endure whatever Mamoswine is gonna try and throw at it. Those seconds are ticking down!

Pfft, if he laughs like that, he'll remind her Li Shuwen, an Assassin who loved to give that sort of laughter when they were fighting. Bring it on!
explosivecombat: (Gentlemen...I love war)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-23 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
He knows the chances of not hitting are rather high, due to the amount of Double-Teaming going on, and he's fully aware that Iron Defense is cutting down on how effective it's going to be to begin with; at the same time, Earthquake is honestly the best he has, and he's a shameless ground-type user most of the time anyway whose primary strategy, when Archer is not screaming at him to do otherwise, is "Spam things." And so he will be spamming things and fully prepared to have Carlisle taken out the next time that Metagross hits him; he's trying to plan for what he's throwing out there next, he's thinking the Ninetales if Carlisle goes down in the next turn. Even if Dorian kind of hates him because this is the second time running that he's thrown him out in the middle of a hailstorm, um.
autocratic: (childlike creativity purity honesty)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-23 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my, Metagross is gonna take one of those Earthquakes, but is only moderately fazed due to its excessive buffing. Just to quickly stop its spamming in between Protecting itself, Metagross will hit Kimblee's Mamoswine with another Bullet Punch.

Upon meeting the Ninetales, Metagross will Protect on first instinct in case of an incoming Fire-attack, then throw a Rock Slide at the fox.
explosivecombat: (Yes - I remember you well)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-23 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
...yeah, what with the buffing, that Bullet Punch is going to end it. You did well, Carlisle, you have earned so many damn treats for later, and...fox, you are going to get decidedly less treats if you don't stop whining at him.

That said, however, the first move Kimblee makes with Dorian won't be stopped due to that first instinct, though it rather will make things a bit less enjoyable - he's starting out with Imprison, which will, at the very least, get rid of Protect as a move for that Metagross. Rock Slide is going to be decidedly unpleasant, but Kimblee isn't moving to set up a full offensive just yet; he's going to want to try to drop that Metagross' attack and doing it normally isn't going to do anything thanks to Clear Body (...no, really, Archer, you have pretty much taught everyone in this battle far too much), so the next move is Will-O-Wisp to attempt inflicting a burn and getting the damage over time to stack with Hail's effect.
autocratic: (I'm fighting for it)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-23 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oho, smart move, Kimblee! Saber will just tilt her head at that but not say anything.

Thanks to its previous use of maxing out its evasion, Metagross will dodge that Will-O-Wisp and bump itself up with another Swords Dance and raising its attack to near sky high levels. Looks like it's gonna try and take out that Ninetales or damage it severely enough if it's taken out in this round. Then it'll go for another Rock Slide.
explosivecombat: (And we're seceding from the world)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-23 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
That Rock Slide will be met with a Protect of Ninetales' own; following that, however, this is when Kimblee decides "screw restraint" and starts with Heat Wave, the logic there being that the wider the spread with the flames, the better his chances are. Or, if we're going to be blunt, his brain works on Shounen Anime Logic and FIRE FIRE YEAH is always a good option. Always. (Except when it's not, but we don't mention those times.)
autocratic: (this'd be a beautiful death)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-23 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
OH WE'RE GOING ALL OUT, ARE WE? Heat Wave will be really damaging to Metagross after all this time, but it'll hang in there. It'll continue to move towards the Ninetales and throwing a Rock Slide at the fire fox... while its body is glowing with an incoming Explosion.
explosivecombat: (A sexy revolution!)

[personal profile] explosivecombat 2012-11-23 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Saber. Saber.

The unfortunate thing about using Explosion in such a way, honestly, is that this is how Kimblee and Archer train on a regular basis, to say nothing of the part where Kimblee is ridiculously familiar with explosions. So at least he knows to not completely flip out when faced with one; if anything he's...looking...a bit too eager for this, um.

However, that Rock Slide is going to be a problem; its accuracy isn't entirely guaranteed, however, and he's far more willing to take his chances attempting to get the Ninetales to evade the rocks and Protect against the Explosion than the other way around.
autocratic: (should have all that power)

[personal profile] autocratic 2012-11-23 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Saber will just smile widely at how that turned out and recalls her Metagross. As always, Machina will be be generously rewarded after the battle. With a flourish, Saber will throw out Praetor the Gyarados to tangle with Ninetales.

She'll start by using Dragon Dance and then summoning up a Surf to bear down on that Ninetales. Its Intimidate will also do a small play on the Ninetales, but for the most part, she's gonna try and finish the job Metagross started.
