Weekly updates and Language Discussion

This weeks weather forecast is as follows:

Today/Tuesday was listed last week as clearing up after all that rain :)

Wednesday

Clear, sunny, comfortable temperatures around the 70s. Low wind.

Thursday

Clear, sunny, comfortable temperatures hanging around 70s and might even spike to almost 80 midday. Humidity feels like it is going up again. Low wind.

Friday

Clear, excessive sunshine, excessive heat. Temperatures between 85-90. Not even a breeze of wind today. High humidity.

Saturday

Clear, excessive sunshine, excessive heat. Temperatures between 90-almost 100. Very very mild breeze. High humidity; you guys will be sweating and it will not evaporate. Ew, smelly trainers!

Sunday

Clear, excessive sunshine, excessive heat. Temperatures between 80-85. Light 5MPH wind is going, so at least there's a chance of evaporating all that smelly sweat. High humidity, but nearing nightfall there will be dark clouds rolling in, and most wild Pokemon will be harder to find as they're preparing their shelters :)

Monday

Barely after midnight, a nasty thunderstorm is cracking into high gear, dropping buckets of water. Once the sun comes up, that rain is turning into golf ball sized hail, so best to take some shelter! It will remain a mixture of hail and rain throughout the day and for the rest of the night.
High 20MPH winds whip that water and ice around like nobodys business, and no wild Pokemon would be caught out in this weather so fat chance you guys will find anything unless its joining you in a cave.
Humidity is dropping steadily though so it's easier to dry off. Temperatures range in the low 60s, possibly dropping to 55.

Tuesday

The hail dissipates overnight and it remains raining hard, thunder cracking and lightning zapping through the air. Electric types will certainly like this weather, and water types will enjoy the rain.
Rain will linger all day at a steady pace, and slowly dwindle into drizzling as night arrives. Super low humidity, wind has dropped down to a mild 10MPH that comes in breezes, temperatures hanging around the low 60s.

Notes: Your characters may purchase umbrellas at the Cherrygrove store starting on Tuesday /o/ they are P100 and don't really break unless you try attacking someone with it (you wouldn't, would you?). Uhhh, there was something else but Okami is brainfarting and can't remember what it was fffffffffffffff IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WEATHER, please feel free to hit her up! (She picked it! Also, PMing her personal journal would be preferred to asking here as we are having a big discussion below.)

Language Discussion!

As for the language discussion, we've decided to ask the players for input before making a complete decision, seeing as this will affect the game as a whole. We would appreciate that you speak to us here, or on AIM, or continue using the questions/concerns and the F.A.Q., rather than jumping to anoncomm for every other circumstance.

First and foremost, we were both disappointed when we heard from a plethora of players that they had not known about the language barrier, when it had been part of the game since the start. To hear that people had not read it is very discouraging to us, but seeing as the game is still new and we are both forgiving people, we would like to ask that you be sure to read these things next time!

Now, for the subject at hand, we've received a handful of suggestions on how to appease the language barrier.

Suggestion 1: Remove the language barrier.
This seems like the one most of the anonymous comments have been suggesting. Rather than mess with the technical issues, just erase it.
[+] It would be easier to continue with "ignoring" the barrier and pretending it was never there.
[-] It dampens the fact that this is a "jamjar" game. They were summoned into Johto using technology, not magic. It would be illogical to have them suddenly speaking the same language without reason.

Suggestion 2: Keep the language barrier make but make PokéGear usage easier.
Instead of having the robot voice, have something sounding similar to the character to keep the inflection and feeling of the character speaking.
[+] The message and feeling of the speaking would travel through to the other characters.
[-] Face-to-face communications might be tricky, depending on how this is fully set up.

Suggestion 3: Keep the language barrier but have subtitles.
The character's voice would still be their native tongue, but their words would translate to the language of the receiving character's PokéGear.
[+] The inflection would not be changed. The meanings would get across directly.
[-] Face-to-face communications may be awkward, seeing as you would have to use your PokéGear to understand them.

Out of all of the suggestions, those were the ones we figured could clear things up the best. If there are other ones, or if we missed some, feel free to tell us here as well. Here's your chance for everyone to talk to us and each other and we can all figure out something that will work best for all of us.

so, question, re: the nature of these translations in 2 and 3. how um. how precise are these translations intended to be? I know I saw something like "gonna" will be autocorrected to "going to" in whatever language it's being put in, but is it autotranslating things like syntax?

THIS IS PROBABLY THINKING FAR TOO MUCH but I ask because I have this doctor here who is pretty much allergic to proper grammar and would probably be impossible to understand in any kind of translation. like Engrish x1000000. and I guess if the point of the language barrier is to make things more realistic, then it kind of logically follows that characters that have these kinds of speech habits would be incomprehensible. 'cause translators aren't magically talented.

I think this made sense.

I think we'd most likely give a leeway when it comes to how precise they are. It would generally be normal but then you could probably mess around babelfish style if you felt like. It could be like the google translator. Most of the time that makes sense, no matter how badly it's written, but every once in a while you'll get "you my eat pizza carrot" when you're asking about a cigarette or something.

[identity profile] derangedhen.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think everything Worth says will turn into asking for pizza carrots, in that case. F-FOR EXAMPLE because I was actually messing with google translate yesterday, I have this sentence from Worth's post:

"Son of a bitch. I don't got time to play with you, I got shit to get done and yer trying my last nerve here --"

if I take that, run it into Japanese and run the Japanese back into English, google gives me this:

"Son female. I, I am trying my last nerve here with the ugly end is not now time to play shit -"

so, um. Assuming that I/other players are not going "oh it magically solves all the problems and reproduces speech in just poor grammar in language 2 from language 1," then, uh, yeah. While I'm sure I could have a laugh saying the Pokegear has a seizure and its translate function implodes every time Worth speaks to it, I - don't really think I'd want to.

I get that, yes, most of the time translators get pretty much exact what you mean to say, and this is mostly an issue that would affect me, playing Worth, or other characters with odd speech patterns (Beat comes to mind, oh Beat), but I guess what I'm trying to get at it is that it would lose its fun really fast to have to play the same NO THAT ISN'T WHAT I MEANT scenario out over and over. And that if we're assuming leeway and almost 100% accuracy, especially in a journal-based game where communicating over the Pokegear seems to be the primary form of play over face-to-face stuff (given everyone being in different places at any given time, etc) -- it might as well not be there. the barrier, I mean. because if the translator is supposed to go for "realism" and then it doesn't actually work like an actual translator, which is far more inaccurate than "English to Japanese translation [voice]" in RP assumes, then. what's the point?

tl;dr I'm doing too much thinking about this, but. 2cents.

... I'm sorry, "son female" made me lol like a moron.

[identity profile] derangedhen.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
it's even better when you have the google translate voice read it to you.

That is hilarious. It reminds me a bit of Bad Translator.

But besides that, well, for Worth, you could just have the device translate many things accordingly. We wouldn't want you have to have to play out the same bad translations if you didn't want to. or it could be hacked to understand his dialect a bit more. With super advanced poketechnology, we'd find some way to make it fit better for you, and probably for Beat too or other characters with odd dialects if the muns wanted it.

[identity profile] derangedhen.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
ha, that one gives me "Her son's wife. Here, I would like to nerves in the latest ugly face is a good time to play -" poor wife.

alright then. I appreciate the option to say "well the Pokegear speaks Worth," so thank you on that! I just don't know if that's getting a little too complicated - making specifics of the functions of the Pokegear for each individual case? 'cause like, it'd work, but if "it knows what they're saying" and a handwave is explaining things, it's teetering on the edge of not having a language barrier at all, y'know?

IDK I DON'T MEAN TO KEEP ADDING QUESTIONSDJFN

No no, that's fine! It's better if we answer all of them anyway so nobody's confused!

Well, the fixed pokedex's could be an optional change. I'd still have to talk with Okami over the whole thing but they'd probably work most of the time but perhaps not all of the time. Or some bonuses and negative effects we'd figure out.

[identity profile] derangedhen.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
most of the time but perhaps not all of the time

I could work with that, I think. :|a I mean, I really don't have an opinion on whether translators give subtitles or a character replica voice (although now I have this mental image of someone showing someone else the subtitles they see when they talk on the 'gear and it's fairly amusing) -- as long as the inflection/shit grammar/tone/whatever is kept, I'm good on that. I'll probably constantly forget to label what language posts are in, in the event the barrier sticks around in 2 or 3 style, but that takes like two seconds of OOC "what language is this" "oh, derpese" and la la rambling.

I was going somewhere with this.

RIGHT, face-to-face things. "He fumbled with the Pokegear to turn the translator on" is something that I know I would forget watch me assume other people would too, oops and it might just be kinda tedious? and then the sticky issues of characters who aren't technologically inclined at all and might not be able to handle face-to-face or gear-only translator-working. and things.

SO I SUPPOSE, for me at least, I'm fine with getting rid of the barrier OR keeping it, but. as long as those tricky details are figured out? otherwise I know there are people JUST LIKE MEEEE who would be constantly pinging you modly ones with questions like WHAT DO I DO, WORTH JUST KICKED HIS POKEGEAR ACROSS THE ROOM AND EVERYONE IS BABBLING KATAKANA AT HIM NOW!!!!

or something like that. I mean, the language barrier isn't really part of the plot, is it? so I feel like you two being bogged down with questions about it would get SO TEDIOUS when there are other things about the game that are more. important.

[personal profile] dreamship 2010-06-08 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
XD well, it would be a challenge if he kicked his pokegear across the room and said "SCREW YOU GUYS, I'M GETTING ICE CREAM" and everyone else is like "Nani?" But there's always getting your pokegear fixed, or finding someone who knows both languages. Or stupidly screaming slowly. The translator would most likely be on automatically unless the character decided he didn't want it and switched the settings to "Off".

Don't worry, when we settle on something, we'll fix all the kinks.

It was originally there for the feeling of the full jamjar effect, though it may possibly deal with a plot. After all, I can get pretty oddly creative if I have to.
