Come one, come all! The Kanto Biregional Tournament!

On Monday the 15th, an announcement is broadcast over televisions and radios across both regions. The advert is about a minute long, and features everyone's favorite cutie gym leader — Lt. Surge!

Been training hard for your badges?
Ha, I doubt it, maggots!

Need more challenge in your life?
Always!

Think you have what it takes to duke it out with some of the top training talent around?

Then come down to Vermillion City, where I'll be hosting the first annual Kanto Biregional Tournament!

To participate, just call:
1-900-T-O-U-R-N-E-Y!

You heard me, 1-900-TOURNEY!

Starting November 5th, don't you dare miss the most talked-about event of the year!

Rules and restrictions apply.

Calling the number will yield an operator taking down their name and ID, then directing them to a Pokémon center to sign a release form and finalize their entry details:

RULES & RESTRICTIONS

A. Participation is free for registered Trainers. Breeders must pay a general P1500 entry fee, plus a P5000 fee to battle in the Elite Cup.

B. There will be four brackets:
    LV5-25 (Junior Cup)
    LV26-50 (Standard Cup)
    LV51-75 (Advanced Cup)
    LV76-100 (Elite Cup)

Entrants may participate in as many brackets as they wish, so long as they do not enter more than once in the same bracket and all participating Pokémon are within allowed levels at time of participation.

C. Limit 3 Pokémon per entered team, except for the Junior Cup, where teams of 6 are permitted.

D. While the premises fit Indigo League safety regulations, all property damage in and around the tournament facility or Vermilion City caused by Pokémon will be charged to their trainer. We thank you for your understanding.

E. All sign-ups are screened. Entrants won't know who's participating and what Pokémon they'll be facing until the day of their battle! They'll be given a few hours to come up with a plan before they face their opponents, so plan accordingly.

F. In the interest of promoting smart battling and strategizing, trainer items are prohibited for this tournament. However, held items (purchasable at the department stores in either region) and berries (harvestable in the wild or in Pallet Town's berry orchard), are acceptable, with a limit of one held item per Pokémon per round.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

While characters are preparing, we'll ask that you comment here with the name of your participating character, the brackets they're entering, and their team for each bracket!

We will accept entries until October 25th, at which point we'll randomly match participants. NPC Gym leaders (aka [personal profile] these_guys) will be participating in the Advanced and Elite tiers, so you might wind up against one of them! It is up to you to determine the victor of each matchup, so there are multiple options, from discussing strategies to using a shoddy battle simulator or just flipping a coin! We know we don't have to remind you guys to play nice, but if you really can't determine a winner, you can bring it to us and we'll flip a quarter for you.

An exact timeline will be determined once we have an idea of the number of participants.

Before, during and after the Tournament, there'll be related promotional events and trainer-friendly sales in Vermilion but also nearby Celadon, Saffron and Cerulean, so even non-participants can have fun!

If you have any questions or suggestions, let us know in this thread.

SIGN-UPS ARE NOW CLOSED.

Probably the most obvious question ever, but are there any prizes for the tournament beyond bragging rights/maybe a shiny medal? Since I know some characters are harder to find IC reason to participate if there's no real incentive to compete...

Oh and can we assume that as of this post there's IC notice of the tournament going around Johto/Kanto? Just to give people time to ICly get to Vermillion for those who don't have access to Fly...

I suppose I should have said, IC notice other than just TV ads, such as fliers or such, since... not all characters actually pay attention to such things. ^_^;;

OH ALSO since this may affect some peoples' choice of what to enter, what are the rules regarding use of items? Can trainers use items at all or is that prohibited? Are items held by pokemon allowed, and what's the feasibility of finding usable held items, or are berries and what's currently listed in the department store about it? for that matter, what berries would be possible to have.....

*jumps in here because missed the memo apparently*

Wait, Sitrus and Lum Berries can be found in the wild now? And Pallet Town's berry orchard has all the berries, not just the basic ones on the Route list? And the department store sells all the non-berry held items now?

*makes so many plans* The berries could all be planted and grown elsewhere normally, right?

Still, they're available. That's good news.

Oh, okay. I must've misread your tag. ^^;;;

Good to know! o7 And the added rule in the post already answered my followup question, so... About the junior cup, it mentions having teams of up to six allowed, but does that mean six can be used in the match regardless of how many the opponent has? Since a lot of characters tend to have teams of very staggered levels, and thus may want to enter the junior cup as well as one (or more) of the higher ones, but only have the minimum 3 pokemon to do so with...

If a Pokémon levels past the level cap in a bracket, are they no longer allowed to participate? This is assuming it happens during the tournament.

Got another question!

Are trainers being told the teams of the trainers they're facing or just who they're up against? Surprises ICly are neat, but I'm not sure how you folks are running it.
islandshore: (determined)

[personal profile] islandshore 2012-10-18 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
So they will end up knowing the species they're facing, then? Does this include levels as well? I'm assuming moves are a total secret, though, since those weren't on the signup form, so I'm guessing there'll at least be some surprises in store for the trainers.
islandshore: (watching the world go by)

[personal profile] islandshore 2012-10-18 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, good to know! C: Glad to see there'll still be surprises.

So, are Leftovers and Eviolite currently obtainable by any chance? :|a

I'm just looking for some clarification, but when you say "a week before" does this apply to all rounds of the tournament? Since I assume being an elimination-based tournament there'll be more than one... and in that case, just how long is the tournament ICly/OOCly going to take?

For that matter, if the OOC time period (whatever it may be) expires and one of the players fails to respond to the other, does the one who DID attempt contact/respond win by default?
islandshore: (huh what?)

[personal profile] islandshore 2012-10-26 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there a chance we might get a tournament plotting post? Not everyone uses plurk or IM, so having a general post for that once the match-ups are made may help. :o

Re: COMMENTS, QUESTIONS?

[personal profile] iownahoofbeast 2012-10-16 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Also a probably-obvious question, but will transportation to Vermillion be provided?
islandshore: (huh what?)

[personal profile] islandshore 2012-10-22 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
One more question. Is the tournament being played as elimination rounds? e.g. the losers of each round don't go on to the next. I know some sports tourneys have other ways of judging rounds where the losers still participate and have a chance of climbing back up, but I'm just curious how you guys plan on arranging it.
islandshore: (Right?)

[personal profile] islandshore 2012-10-24 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Aye, thought so. Thanks for the clarification!

Also, is evolution allowed during the tourney? Some of Riku's lower bracket Pokémon may be close to evolving by the time the tournament starts, and if he makes it to the next round with them, I just wanna check and see if he'd even be allowed to let his Marshtomp evolve.
