The Kanto Biregional Tournament: get your matchups here!

The below matchups are final and will not be changed, unless one participant is in the wrong bracket due to an oversight. Participants will have 7 days to give us Round 1 winners, at which point we'll be posting the next round's matches. Each round will be randomized to provide some diversity.

Due to the large number of rounds — 6 for Elite — we will be shortening the amount of time players will have to give us their answers, so that the last few Elite rounds will be spaced 3 days apart. If you're afraid of missing a date, just check the calendar for more information!

In the case that one partner goes missing, the person who attempted contact will win by default. If extenuating circumstances come into play, such as a personal emergency requiring a hiatus (with due warning to the mods and the battle partner), we will flip a coin.

Update: players facing off against gym leaders can have a coin flipped (default) or choose to strategize, in which case they should use the post here.

To post winners, please see this screened post! BOTH partners must comment with the name of winner in order for the victory to be valid. If not, see the above paragraph. If neither player comments, there will be no victor.

You can use this post to discuss your matches. If no consensus can be reached, the mods will flip a coin upon request.

Playing out the matches is highly encouraged, but optional! Here is an open log for all your battling needs! Bugsy, Whitney, Brock, Misty, Blaine, Surge and Blue will be competing in the tournament and will also be participating in the open log, under the account [personal profile] these_guys.

The prizes at the very end of the tournament will be one (1) fossil and one (1) reusable Unova TM, both chosen by the winners.

Without further ado, here are the matchups for round 1!

If you have any questions, let us know!

Regarding matchups against gym leaders.... isn't it kind of unfair to the players to decide it solely by coinflip? I mean, as a last resort for ANY match, sure, but any player vs player battle, both players get a chance to TALK to someone about the battle and plot things out to figure how the battle goes and who wins. But delegating gym leaders to "coinflip" instead of having a mod or such hash it out with the player is kind of cheating the player out of the chance to try to keep things IC and play them out appropriately....

Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree. Players are allowed to give strategy feedback on the actual badge request post, so it'd be nice to at least have a bit of an option as far as these matches go. Not that having landslide victories would be a good idea either-- it'd just be nice to have a feedback option if possible.

Oh, I'd totally forgotten about the badge requests thing, but that's a great example. XD

Say, is the log exclusively for battling, or is it also okay to set up threads for mingling and other such activities during the tourny?

See, the thing is, I don't think a coin toss is an "equal" chance, because if in the shuffle of things a Gym Leader went up against a player with a severe level or type disadvantage, or vice versa, short of an amazingly good strategy and a lot of luck, you'd have a clear winner, all things being, well, equal. I personally don't think there's likely to be too much of an issue of powerplaying from the mods--I mean, it's sure not a problem with gym battles, obviously--and giving players a chance to give their feedback DOES give them a fair shot at things.

That, and when it comes to playing out or even handwaving battles, it's a whole lot easier to do if there HAS been some discussion (even if said discussion ends in a coinflip to determine who lucks out at the very last turn in the end!) to get a general idea of how the battle goes down. So if it could even be an opt-in thing, like having a [personal profile] these_guys comment in this post for people with matchups against gym leaders to reply to or something that would probably work best, in my opinion.

Is there any way I can get that coin flip sooner than later on Saber in the junior round? One of my current match ups is kind of in the air until I figure out how the other battles go and this is the last one I need a conclusion too. Sorry for asking and if it can't be done before the date, I understand.

Thanks for considering my request.

OPT-IN: NPC MATCHES

[personal profile] these_guys 2012-11-01 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
This will function just like badge requests! So post your strategy and we'll say if they got it or not.

If you choose not to reply to this post to strategize your NPC matchup, we'll flip a coin for you!

Here's a little something I found that I thought would be helpful to those of us who want to be dorks and are threading out the battles. Enjoy everyone!

POSSIBLY DUMB REQUEST...

[personal profile] lightningbearer 2012-11-06 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
...but while I can see the reasoning behind it, is it possible comments for settled matches not be screened? If I can't view the replies to my own threads it makes it a little hard to remember exactly how a battle that was discussed is supposed to go.... ^_^;;;
islandshore: (Right?)

Hey, out of curiosity, will there be any smaller prizes for the runners up? Also, do all cups have the same first prize? (fossil + TM)
enjoymyatelier: maybe he should check the foundations, come to think of it. (red car. good point.)

[personal profile] enjoymyatelier 2012-11-09 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Would it be possible to have/set up a general mingle log for Vermillion? I know the tourney log can technically cover that, but imo mingling might take off a little more if there's an open post set aside for that, especially since a pretty large portion of the game's characters are in one location and it's a good way to organize CR meetups.
beforethedarkness: (That's the best you can do?)

[personal profile] beforethedarkness 2012-11-09 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the sound of this idea too, to be honest. Having mingling on a separate post just makes it easier for competitors and people there to just watch or cheer to interact in a common setting rather than in one big thread in the battle log.
enjoymyatelier: actually, it totally will. (aha! a plan that will not end in failure)

[personal profile] enjoymyatelier 2012-11-09 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and it's also an easier way to set up things that take place during the days between rounds that don't necessarily have to do with the tournament itself, I think.
enjoymyatelier: things are good (the sun is shining)
