Until Then, Sleep While You Can...
????: ????
DAY ?/?, ??:??.
Welcome to the October 2013 Modplot! We're in for a spooky ride this year, so hopefully you're all ready for a haunting...sort of.
As many of you may have noticed, our Calendar Page currently lists three "Nightmares" events occurring on October 9th, 14th, and 17th, respectively. These are not the actual plot; however, they are leadup to the plot, and this infopost is primarily for explaining what's going to be happening — and what you can look forward to as the month progresses! But first, let's get some of the preliminary questions out of the way.
WHEN IS THIS PLOT TAKING PLACE?
As of right now, we have the last two weeks of the month reserved as potential plot dates; however, we guarantee that the total duration of the plot will run for less than a week. We're figuring out the best dates for everyone concerned at the moment, but right now our tentative timeframe for the plot's runtime is October 25 through October 30.
OKAY, SO WHAT'S THIS PLOT ALL ABOUT, THEN?
First and foremost, this is a field trip plot; much like with Prom, participating characters will be temporarily displaced from their current circumstances in Johto and taken to a closed environment for the duration of the plot. Also like Prom, we will be releasing maps and descriptions of this area as we get closer to the start of the plot; rest assured, player characters will have plenty of advance notice to make plans and figure out how they want to participate — if at all.
Participation is not mandatory; however, in order to participate in the field trip aspects of the plot, characters must also participate in the preliminary Nightmare events. However, participating in the Nightmare events does not mean you're obligated to be a part of the plot once you find out more about it! If you end up changing your mind later and decide you don't want to play even though you did the nightmares, that's perfectly fine! You're more than welcome to back out at any time prior to the beginning of the plot. But in order to be a part of the plot, you must participate in the Nightmare events; for plot reasons, you won't be able to pass on the Nightmares but then decide later that you want to get in on the plot. So choose wisely!
Things this plot will include are:
• Travel to an as-yet-unvisited area for setting purposes
• All participating characters getting thrown together for the duration, like at Prom
• Opportunities for characters to gain information about other regions of the Pokemon world
• Opportunities for battling
• A reward for every character in the game (participating or not) if participating characters "win" the plot
• A generally spooky atmosphere
Note also that participating characters will temporarily lose their Pokemon. It is mandatory to lose them for the duration of the plot; taking the opportunity to retrieve them will be optional.
WAIT, WAIT. I HAVE TO LOSE MY POKEMON?
Yup! You heard right. At the start of the plot, all participating characters will be deprived of their Pokemon.
...BUT THIS IS A POKEMON GAME.
Happy Halloween.
OKAY, BUT YOU PROMISE I'LL GET THEM BACK?
Characters will have every opportunity to get back their lost Pokemon, yes, assuming they make the effort to do so over the course of the plot. However, getting them back is optional; if you'd like to make your character suffer the permanent loss of one or more of their roster, that's fine too! You'll get more specifics on how precisely that will play out with the upcoming setting information post, but we wanted to give players the possibility for this plot to have lasting consequences in that respect.
THAT'S GREAT, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE NIGHTMARES THING?
The Nightmares events relate directly to the loss-of-Pokemon aspect of the plot! This is why participating characters must experience the nightmares in the leadup to the plot: the nightmares players experience must involve up to three Pokemon from their roster. The three Pokemon that characters dream about will be the ones that accompany them on the plot; they will also be the three Pokemon that the characters ultimately lose and have the opportunity to regain.
We're leaving the content of these nightmares entirely up to player discretion! The only two requirements are:
• They must be nightmares; characters should wake up with a general feeling of foreboding after experiencing one.
• They must involve at least one and no more than three of the character's current Pokemon roster.
BUT MY CHARACTER DOESN'T HAVE THREE POKÉMON YET.
That's okay! They can still participate!
ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE ME SHOW PROOF THAT MY CHARACTER HAD THE NIGHTMARES?
Nah, we're on the honor system for this one. You can handwave it if you really want to, or if it's more convenient for you, but ICly characters should be behaving as though they happened, whether or not OOCly it actually gets threaded out. We encourage you to have fun with it, though!
WHAT WAS THAT YOU MENTIONED ABOUT "WINNING" THE PLOT?
Likewise in the spirit of allowing player actions to make an impact on the plot, we've built in two possible endgame scenarios — a "win" condition and a "lose" condition, if you will. A later plot post will elaborate further on how to successfully win the plot (we're not going to keep you in the dark or hide the ball on that one, promise), but it will be dependent on player action.
This also means that participating players should plan to devote a fair amount of attention to the plot as it's unfolding. We're not discouraging backdating by any means (quite the contrary, we're all for it), but determination of whether or not participating characters have met the win condition will be made on a deadline, so please take that into consideration as you make your plans for this plot! Again, you'll get more details well in advance of things kicking off; this post is largely just to let you know what's happening with the Nightmares aspect, because we've got one coming up this week and we wanted to give you some time to plan for that.
Also, like we mentioned, winning the plot means all characters in the game, participating or not, will get a Fabulous Prize™. So there's good incentive to beat this one.
ARE YOU GOING TO DO ONE OF THOSE QUICK RECAP THINGS LIKE YOU ALWAYS DO?
Sure am.
TO RECAP:
• October 9th, 14th, and 17th: participating characters experience nightmares.
• These nightmares involve, in some capacity, at least one (and no more than three) of their Pokemon.
• Other than that, players have full discretion as to what the nightmares are about.
• The Pokemon they dream about will be the Pokemon that accompany them on the plot.
• The nightmares, therefore, foreshadow the ultimate loss of the Pokemon.
• Actual loss of the Pokemon will not occur until the plot at the end of the month kicks off.
• To participate in the plot taking place at the end of the month, characters must experience the nightmares.
• Characters who experience the nightmares are permitted to back out of the forthcoming plot if they subsequently decide they don't want to be a part of it.
• More details on what exactly is going to be happening are still to come!
THIS SURE IS A LOT OF TALK OF NIGHTMARES. THAT'S PRETTY SUSPICIOUS.
We have absolutely no idea what you could possibly be getting at here.
IF YOU INTEND TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NIGHTMARES, please leave us a comment HERE with the name of your character and the Pokemon they'll be dreaming about! This is just so we can get a rough headcount of who's interested; it's not a hard and fast commitment, and you're welcome to modify that information at any time.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, please leave them for us here!
