We'll weather the weather whatever the weather!
Hey there, Routians! As some of you savvy calendar-watchers have probably noticed, we've got some rather nasty weather coming up on us next week!
In keeping with some of the...unusual weather we've been having over the past few months, on the 29th and 30th of July the two regions will be experiencing inclement weather! On the 29th, there will be massive thunderstorms that sweep the two regions, and on the 30th those storms will be followed by a hurricane! While dangerous for the duration, these two weather events will also be isolated to their respective days; oddly enough, by July 31, things will be back to sun and clear skies.
With that in mind, please read below for some important information about this event!
DO I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS EVENT?
Yes and no! Because this is a weather condition event, there isn't precisely an opt-out; both of the regions will be getting hit in a way that can't be outright ignored. However, not all locations will be affected equally by the weather, and you are more than welcome to handwave that your character safely weathered the storms, either in a secure location in one of the cities like the Pokemon Centers, or in a distant area of the map that managed to escape the brunt of the weather.
NOTE: the regions' emergency bussing system will be in effect from Sunday, July 27th to 11:59 PM on Monday, July 28th, and then operational again from Thursday, July 31 to 11:59 PM on Friday, August 1, if your character is stranded somewhere and you would like to move them to a different location.
Characters may also utilize this game function for assistance in moving around the map if they wish to head to one of the danger zone cities and help out with the damage, either before the storms strike or after they've concluded!
WHAT LOCATIONS WILL BE AFFECTED MOST?
Predictably, coastal areas will be affected moreso than the far inland ones; if you're on an island or in one of the cities that sits on the oceanfront, you can expect much worse weather (and potential damage) than otherwise. Cities up in the mountains like Blackthorn and Pewter are likely to suffer very little damage; cities like Olivine and Fuchsia will be battening down their hatches. Check our region maps of Johto and Kanto for a better idea!
While every city will experience the thunderstorms approximately equally, these are the cities that will be hit worst by the subsequent hurricane:
Johto Oceanfront Locations: Cherrygrove City, Goldenrod City, Olivine City, and Cianwood City
Kanto Oceanfront Locations: Pallet Town, Cinnabar Island, the Seafoam Islands, Fuschia City, and Vermilion City
SO THERE'S GOING TO BE PROPERTY DAMAGE?
Again, yes and no! Players are welcome and encouraged to play with this as much as they like. On an NPC level, buildings will likely suffer damage and there may be sporadic power outages, but the resident Gym Leaders, police forces, and Pokemon Center employees will all be working together to help maintain order and get things back on track during the event and once it's over. Basically, these are setting hooks that we hope will facilitate character interaction and discussion, and we encourage you to use them as you see fit for the duration!
NOTE: On an NPC level, because the Gym Leaders will be mobilizing to assist with repairs and cleanup of the damage to the cities, the Gyms will be closed to challengers from Monday, July 28 until Saturday, August 9! They apologize for the inconvenience, and will be happy to resume taking challenges once disaster efforts are largely concluded.
For the particularly ambitious characters out there, we'd love to see some PC responses to the coming weather, and if your character is the sort to want to pitch in and help out ICly, we strongly encourage you to do so! Whether you're working together with other player characters or making efforts on your own, it's our hope that making preparations for a coming bout of inclement weather will provide new and interesting opportunities for characters to interact, create CR, and work together in ways they might not have the incentive to otherwise.
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS I COULD DO TO HELP OUT?
The possibilities are endless! For example, you could:
• Volunteer at a Pokemon Center assembling kits of storm supplies
• Train your Electric-types to act as backup generators in case of a power outage
• Set up crack teams of 'mons with Sunny Day to blanket areas and try to mitigate the storms
• Throw a Pokeball at the hurricane
• Throw a shoe at the hurricane
• Throw everyone's shoes at the hurricane
• Send a strongly-worded letter of complaint to Team Aqua (to which they will respond with a cordially worded form letter disavowing that they had anything to do with this)
• Anything else you might come up with!
Essentially, while this is a natural disaster event, we're also not mandating that it be treated as severe and grimdark; rather, we're hoping that it will present a challenge for players to react to and attempt to address in their own various IC ways if they so choose!
DO I HAVE TO GET MOD PERMISSION BEFORE I CAN TAKE ACTION?
If it's going to require NPC interaction above and beyond the customary level (I.E. more involved than "I'm pitching in to help at a Pokemon Center" or "Officer Jenny told me to stay off the docks", and so on), please give us a heads-up about it in advance, if only so we can tell you what that NPC's response might be! Otherwise, feel free to be creative!
For questions about NPCs, please feel free to ask us about it here!
DID YOU SAY THERE'S GOING TO BE AN EV NEWS POST WARNING US ABOUT THIS?
That's right! Watch for it in the next day or so. You can find it here!
CAN I USE THE COMMENTS OF THIS POST TO PLOT THINGS WITH OTHER PLAYERS?
You certainly may, and we definitely encourage it!
I HAVE A QUESTION YOU HAVEN'T ANSWERED YET!
Please feel free to ask us about it here!
ELEVENTH HOUR ADDENDUM: DO THE WEATHER BUREAUS IN JOHTO/KANTO NAME THEIR HURRICANES?
They do now. They'll be dubbing this one "Hurricane Bloober" because Kalos can take a hike, in Johto/Kanto we do what we want.
ELEVENTH HOUR ADDENDUM: CAN THE COASTAL CITIES ALSO BE HIT WITH SHARPEDONADOES?
We see absolutely no way an impromptu Sharpedo swarm delivered in the form of a phrase ending in "-adoes" can possibly result in anything but utter hilarity. Yes, if you are in one of our oceanfront cities named above, feel free to experience the implausible weather phenomenon that is a Sharpedonado, and godspeed.
