Yeah, I'd say that out of all the poison types, those two lines have the short end of the stick. At least most other poisonous Pokémon resemble animals or bugs instead of putrid ooze.

If it's like the monster movies, we wouldn't have a chance without a surprise attack and knowing how they behave.

In that kind of scenario, I think the Elite Four and gym leaders would have a chance with their best teams. Although, coordinating and having good team synergy is another thing.

I guess it depends on how vulnerable legendaries are to status moves, too. A well-timed Hypnosis or Toxic might level the playing field a little bit.
