I had thought about making her witness him dying in whatever horrible way you are planning and then told myself that might be a little too evil even for me so she'll be entirely oblivious until he doesn't answer whatever message she sends afterwards. Which will send her panicking and running to whoever else she knows that is there. Oh the fun.
